International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th every year across the globe. This day is dedicated to recognising women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements, and raising awareness about the remaining gender inequality. It also serves as a reminder to take action towards accelerating women's progress towards equality.

International Women's Day originated from labour movements in North America and Europe at the turn of the 20th century.

WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

In 1908, 15,000 women in New York marched to protest the dreadful working conditions and exploitation they were facing. Their demands were for shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote.

Throughout the 20th century, International Women's Day was celebrated as a symbol of social justice by people at the grassroots level.

International Women’s Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 1975 during the International Women’s Year and has been observed annually on March 8th since then.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

International Women's Day is a day to acknowledge the progress we've made towards gender equality and also to recognize how far we still have to go.

In the past, women were not allowed to vote, work in certain industries, or hold high positions in companies. However, today, women are leading countries and running major corporations. Women have greater rights than ever before, including rights that their grandmothers could only have dreamed about, complete gender equality has not been achieved yet. Unfortunately, many women around the world still face significant barriers and are far from achieving this goal.

International Women's Day has come a long way since its early inception. Today, it has gained immense prominence and reach, touching the lives of women in every corner of the world. The growing international women's movement has made International Women's Day a key focal point for action, helping to build support for women's rights and their full participation in all aspects of society, including the economy, politics, and community.

INSPIRE INCLUSION

This year the theme is Inspire Inclusion. The official website of International Women’s Day puts it very eloquently

“To inspire inclusion means to celebrate diversity and empowerment on International Women's Day 2024 and beyond."

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global celebration of women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. Each year, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and highlights the work that still needs to be done. In 2024, the campaign theme Inspire Inclusion emphasises the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society.

This year's campaign theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality. It calls for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected. Inspire Inclusion encourages everyone to recognise the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalized communities.”

As we commemorate International Women's Day in 2024, let’s think about the theme of "Inspire Inclusion." It is a reminder to us all to renew our commitment towards creating a world where every woman feels empowered, valued, and included. By working together to break down barriers and promote diversity, we can build a more just and inclusive society for future generations.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year we are proudly supporting a charity called Share the Dignity.

Share the Dignity is an Australian charity that focuses on helping people who are experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or facing difficult circumstances. They collect period products every year through various campaigns and drives and distribute these products to charities that provide support to anyone who menstruates and needs assistance.

Access to period products are a right, not a privilege. One in five Australians have been unable to afford such products at some point in their life.

To show our support of this charity, on Friday 8th March we are donating $5 from each sale made through our online store to Share the Dignity, so if you’ve been tempted by something online – today is the day to buy it!

If you’re not shopping with us on the 8th, you can also donate directly to Share the Dignity.
