Every year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated around the world on the 8th of March. It’s a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, and marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

International Women’s Day was first born out of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe.

Since those early days, International Women’s Day has grown in prominence and reach, touching women in every corner of the world. The growing international women’s movement has helped make International Women’s Day a central point for action, to build support for women’s rights and their full participation in the economy, politics, community and in everyday life.

This year the theme is #EmbraceEquity.

What’s the difference between Equality and Equity? Equality is the goal, and equity is a means to get there. When we embrace equity, we embrace diversity, and we embrace inclusion. People start from different places, have different skills, and need different levels of assistance to achieve inclusion, a sense of belonging and equality.

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year we are supporting SisterWorks. This is a charity dedicated to helping refugee, migrant, and asylum-seeking women with education, vocational skills, and opportunities for employment. Over the past 10 years, they have supported over 2,000 migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker women from 105 countries to build a better life in Australia through skills training and work opportunities.

SisterWorks delivers learning opportunities through vocational training programmes in small business, hospitality, sewing, warehouse/manufacturing and customer service. If you’re close to Bridge Road in Richmond (Victoria) pop into their Crafted Culture café, grab a coffee and meet some of the women. SisterWorks believes “We learn by doing. We share knowledge, we support each other and together we grow” and the hundreds of women they have helped are certainly a testament to this. This charity is embracing equity by providing the tools for each woman to achieve their dream of gaining employment.
