Coverlets have become a popular choice for modern-day bedding, as they provide a stylish and versatile way to add warmth and texture to a bedroom. Unlike traditional quilts, which are often made by hand and feature intricate patchwork designs, most modern coverlets are quilted using a machine, which allows for a greater range of patterns and styles.

The origins of coverlets can be traced back to Sweden in the fifteenth century, where heavily stitched and appliquéd quilts were created for the wealthy. These early quilts were both decorative and functional and were often found in churches and the homes of nobility.

Over time, the design, materials, and techniques used to make coverlets have evolved, with more elaborate and decorative patterns emerging in the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, coverlets featuring intricate designs and motifs such as flowers, animals, and scenes from nature became popular.

In the United States, the popularity of coverlets peaked during the mid-19th century, when they were produced on a large scale by textile mills. These factory-made coverlets were typically made of wool, cotton, or a blend of both, and were often decorated with colourful geometric patterns.

Indeed, coverlets have continued to evolve in the 20th century, and their popularity has remained strong. With the advent of synthetic materials, coverlets became even more accessible and affordable.

Today, coverlets are available in a wide range of materials and styles, ranging from simple running stitch designs to more intricate and elaborate patterns. They are a versatile and stylish addition to any bedroom, providing both warmth and visual appeal and they help make the bed a focal point in the room.

Depending on the season, you may prefer to have a couple of coverlets, one for warmer months and another for colder seasons. For example, a lightweight cotton coverlet may be perfect by itself for Summer while a heavier quilted coverlet will provide added warmth in the Winter.

Making a bed with a coverlet is relatively easy and straightforward. Once you’ve put on the quilt, in the chosen cover, there are a couple of options that work well with most coverlets.

  1. To give your bedding a more luxurious and fuller look, fold a coverlet into thirds and place it on top of your quilt at the foot, or in the middle of the bed.
  2. Use a coverlet as a bedspread by draping it over the entire bed, particularly if you have matching shams, cushions, or accent pillowcases.
  3. To create a cosy atmosphere, fold the coverlet in half and drape it over the foot of the bed. This adds warmth and texture to the space while providing an extra layer of comfort on colder nights.
  4.  Add a couple of pillows, some shams to match the coverlet, and a throw for some additional texture and you have created a beautiful and inviting bed.

To create a look that reflects your personal style, experiment with different layering techniques by mixing and matching various quilt covers, coverlets, and throws. Whether it’s for on the bed for purely decorative purposes or you’re going to use it, it will be close at hand and look perfectly styled with these options.
