We all know that a clutter-free bedroom is better for inducing a good night’s sleep – that’s why a bedside table can make or break your bedroom. It’s not only a stylish bedroom accent – it’s your best friend, to look after all the things you need and keep them within a comfortable arm’s reach. It’s a place for your lamp for bedtime reading, a novel, a glass of water and even a small vase with some flowers – whatever will help create a cosy haven where you can unwind after a long day and wake up ready to face the new one.

Choosing the perfect bedside table requires a lot of thought and it’s important to find the right balance between practicality and style. When the bedside table is in proportion to the bed and other furniture, it creates visual balance and harmony in the room.

HOW TALL SHOULD A BEDSIDE TABLE BE?

Ensure you have your bed in place before you even start your bedside table journey. You might be thinking of trading up from a queen size bed to a king size, or just a new mattress – so get those elements sorted and in place in your bedroom first, because you need to get the proportions right. If you’re replacing some existing bedside tables that are too low and you would like to “try out” something higher – add some coffee table books on the top, then pop your lamp and a few things on there and try it for a few days – swapping different height books until, like Goldilocks, you get it “just right”. Then measure the distance from the floor to the top of the books – there you have it – the ideal height of your new bedside tables. As a general rule, the height of the bedside table should be a similar height as the top of the mattress, so there’s a seamless connection between them.

The height of the bedside table is an important factor as it plays a crucial role in both the function and the appearance of the bedroom. Selecting the bedside table height that suits you is a matter of personal preference, ergonomic considerations, and the overall design of the room.

Imagine that you’re tucked in bed, snug under the covers ready to read a chapter or two of your book before falling asleep when you realise that your glasses and your novel are on the bedside table. Can you reach them easily? It would be inconvenient and maybe even a bit dangerous if you had to stretch or twist uncomfortably to reach them, wouldn't it? This is where having the perfect height bedside table becomes essential.

BEDSIDE TABLE SIZE GUIDE

Don’t arrive to the store and try to visualise how high your bed is, there are so many variables – the thickness of the mattress, the height of the bed or base. You don’t want to fall in love with the bedside table of your dreams, only to discover that it is too low or too high for your bed. So, before you go shopping, get out your tape measure and take a few measurements. Think about the style that would suit your space. Is it a minimal stool? Or are there features that are important to you – such as a drawer, (if you’re not the tidiest person, let's be honest – you may need a drawer to hide a few things away), storage space, a shelf, the colour, and the material you’d prefer? The more information you have, the less chance of a costly mistake.

  1. Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress – this will give you a starting point for the height of the bedside table.
  2. Measure the distance from the side of the bed to the walls (or wardrobe doors if they open out towards the bed) – this measurement will give you the absolute maximum width of a bedside table, but it’s best to have a bit of space on the side of a bedside table and the wall.
  3. Measure the depth of your bedhead (how far it comes out from the wall) – if you have a deep bedhead, you may need a deeper bedside table, otherwise, it will be too far behind the bed and not ergonomically great for reaching to turn off an alarm clock, for a glass of water or turning off your bedside light.
  4. Do you have a queen or king bed? Is it high or low? The proportions of the bed will visually impact the bedside table.

If you have a big bed with a deep mattress and ample space in your bedroom, you may want to consider getting a larger bedside table or chest of drawers that complements the size of your bed. However, if you have a modern, low bed, you can opt for a sleeker and shorter bedside table that will better suit your bed.

Design trends change with time, affecting people's preferences for the height, shape, and style of bedside tables to keep up with modern tastes and lifestyle requirements. However, comfort remains a timeless factor to consider when choosing the perfect height for your bedside table. After all, you are the one who will be using it daily.
