The bedroom is the most personal room of your home – it should be relaxing, visually appealing, calm and welcoming. It’s more than a sleeping space - It should be a room that makes you feel happy whenever you’re in it. It should also reflect your style, so take some time to work out what bedroom design you prefer – is it minimalist, modern, traditional, Scandinavian or your version of one of these styles? This will also guide your choices of furniture, colour and bedroom décor.

HOW TO STYLE A BEDROOM

Colour

The choice of colours in the bedroom is important – soft neutral tones create a calming effect, and bolder colours can add energy to the room. A balanced combination of colours works best for walls, bedding and accents.

A neutral colour is defined as “A colour without much intensity or saturation. It’s a colour which generally goes with every other colour.” Neutrals include hues like beiges, ivories, creams, whites, blacks, and greys. Blues and greens can also be classed as neutral colours, have a look around outdoors - Mother Nature makes blues and green work with everything.

Select a paint colour for your walls carefully – light changes with the seasons and at night, so get a large swatch of the colour, stick it on the walls and see how it changes throughout the day – then move it to another area and do the same. Make sure you love it before you commit to painting the whole room.

Bedroom Furniture

As your bed is the focal point of the room, a new bedhead can alter the look of the whole room – and consider painting an accent wall behind the bedhead. Keep furniture and clutter to a minimum – you need room to breathe. To keep your bedroom clutter-free, bedroom storage is a must-have! If you’re not the tidiest person, a piece of furniture (or two) with drawers will be your best choice.

Start with a bedside table and add a table lamp. The surfaces of a bedside table and a chest of drawers are perfect places to create pretty vignettes of treasured items.

Is there room for a chair in your bedroom? This can be a great addition to a bedroom and paired with a floor lamp creates a place to escape and read a book during the day. A bench at the end of the bed doesn’t take up a lot of space but can add a lot to the design of the room and it’s also perfect for stacking throws, books or sitting on to put on your shoes in the morning.

Bedding

To create a cosy bed, start by selecting good-quality bed linen, quilt covers, and pillows. Layering textures and fabrics add depth and visual interest, especially when you’re working with a reduced colour palette. Add a throw blanket and throw pillows that complement your bedding. These accents can add a pop of colour or pattern and make your bed look even more inviting.

Seasonal styling is a wonderful way to change colours in your bedroom. Add extra warmth and heavier textures with a velvet coverlet like our Savannah or Harriet that will look more opulent in the cooler months while a cotton coverlet looks fresher and lighter in the warmer months.

Lighting

Never underestimate lighting and how different light fixtures can change the ambience of your bedroom. Table lamps are essential for reading in bed and they’re also stylish décor pieces to add a pop of colour that overhead lighting can't provide. A floor lamp in the corner of a room, next to a chair is also a perfect addition to your bedroom.

Rugs

If you have wooden floors, a generous rug will soften the room and be welcome underfoot during the cooler months. It can also add another dimension when it’s layered on top of the carpet – and perfect if you’re renting and the carpet isn’t something you’d choose.

Artwork

A single statement piece of art or a gallery wall of all your favourite photos and smaller artwork can take you on a sentimental journey and make your bedroom feel very familiar.
