With torrential downpours and collapsing ceilings, this week created extra drama for the contestants trying to finish their Work From Home spaces on The Block. While investments this week ranged from $13,917 to $37,728 it also emphasised that spending the most money on a room does not necessarily guarantee first place, with the lowest spend by Leslie & Kyle managing to come in second position and the hefty spend of Leah & Ash of $37,728 giving them an equal fourth position.
Final Scores:
House 4, Steph & Gian: 26.5 points – 1st
House 1, Kyle & Leslie: 26 points – 2nd
House 3, Kristy & Brett: 24 points – 3rd
House 5, Eliza & Liberty: 22.5 points – equal 4th
House 2, Leah & Ash: 22.5 points – equal 4th
THE BLOCK WINNING STUDY – STEPH & GIAN
They won first position for the second week in a row with careful spending of $22,381. They produced a stylish room, with clever cabinetry and a long desk to allow two people to work comfortably, and with a large TV between them, the space could also be used as a media room. Our gorgeous Chirala Rug was a perfect choice for the refined colour palette they chose for their room.
Judge Darren Palmer is still vacillating between loving and hating the ceiling beams – this week he doesn’t like them!
Marty thinks the room is sophisticated, saying “it feels high-end”, and it was what buyers were looking for.
KYLE & LESLIE
With only half a point less, Leslie and Kyle managed to take second place this week. They also chose a neutral colour palette which looked timeless and elegant.
Shaynna Blaze complimented our Sorrento Armchairs and Ottoman saying "I think their aesthetic is really quite beautiful and suited to this area.". They were a great choice for their room and we also spied some of our books, urns and vases – astute shopping by Leslie & Kyle!
They were very clever with their design and managed to achieve a beautiful room only outlaying $13,917.
KRISTY & BRETT
They came in third place this week with their dedicated office space, which was stylish and tonal, but the reaction from the judges was not all positive.
“I think they’ve taken work from home too literally,” Shaynna Blaze says of Kristy and Brett’s $29,919 space, featuring a desk, open shelving and two facing chairs. “This feels like a commercial office.”
Marty Fox is not happy with their planning as they’re the only ones using their front yard to house their pool.
He thinks this room, which overlooks their future pool, would have been better used as an extra living space/guest bedroom.
“The front of this room is overlooking a pool, and I’m standing in a study?” he says. “I’m not sure this is doing them any favours.”
ELIZA & LIBERTY
The sisters decided to create another bedroom as they had included a Work From Home space in their studio last week. On walking in, the judges were impressed that they were not knee-deep in water, as they were also impacted by the storms.
Darren thinks it’s an improvement from last week and Shayna exclaims, “These girls have got spunk!”
Marty thinks the room has a really nice feel and is impressed that they now have a downstairs bedroom, and even better that it can be presented as a five-bedroom house.
Their $27,051 room is described as a “good version of the ‘90s, and the ‘90s is so in right now” by Shaynna Blaze and they came equal fourth.
LEAH & ASH
Leah and Ash won the prize for spending the most money for the week, parting with $37,728 but came equal fourth. They did really well to present a room, as after the rain, they had water coming in through all the downlights, and their ceiling collapsed. They deviated from the classic, tonal colours used by the other teams, choosing a colour scheme that was bold and dramatic, “This is glamazon,” Shaynna says of the sea green walls and 3m photographic print. “I love it.”
Marty is more concerned that they have lost a bedroom, and their house now is only a 3 bedroom, while all the other houses have 4 bedrooms, and one even has 5.
We can’t wait to see what dramas unfold next week and to see the reveal of the downstairs bathrooms.
