Journal

Whatever inspiration you’re after…. a new recipe to wow the family, a little bit of help making the perfect bed, styling a sideboard, some lifestyle articles or what’s new at Provincial, our Journal will bring you stories to brighten your day.

This week, we hit the halfway mark of the 2023 season with the block master bedroom reveals. We saw Steph and Gian claim their third win with perennial bridesmaids Kristy and Brett as the runners-up. Kristy did not disappoint with her “mean girl” tirades about “why IT wasn’t fair”, and “IT” is anything she doesn’t agree with! Scott suggested that the spending for this week should be close to $25,000, so let’s see who listened to that advice.

Final Scores:

House 4, Steph and Gian: 29 points – 1st
House 3, Kristy and Brett: 27.5 points – 2nd
House 2, Leah and Ash: 23.2 points – 3rd
House 5, Eliza and Liberty: 22.5 points – 4th
House 1, Kyle and Leslie: 21 points - 5th

THE BLOCK MASTER BEDROOM WINNER – STEPH & GIAN

Is this the largest master bedroom ever attempted on The Block? With a spend of $44,064, they delivered a grand bedroom and an even grander walk-in wardrobe.

They continued with their sophisticated palette and luxe finishes and had a handy $20,000 Kinsman wardrobe upgrade to take their wardrobe to another level. Their large bedroom featured a superb sitting area complete with a sofa, armchair, and coffee table.

"This could be put in any home at $20 million plus, it hits the brief," said Marty. "Wow, $20 million plus?" replied Shaynna. "It's really blown me away," assured Marty.

KRISTY & BRETT

Kristy and Brett spent a whopping $42,826 on their master bedroom and walk-in robe, crossing their fingers that this would give them a win.

Upon entering the room, Marty describes it as "Light, airy, warm and cosy, it sort of gives you a big hug!"

Shaynna added, "This feels like it has just the right floor plan. Everything's in the right position. I feel like the bed is in the right spot. I feel like we walked past the wardrobe. We've got this beautiful fireplace. TV placement is perfect." "That Venetian plaster looks really beautiful here and I love the colour," said Darren.

The bedside tables weren’t a big hit with Scotty reading the comments at Block HQ "Darren thinks if you get bigger bedside tables with drawers in them. This will be one of the hero shots of your home."

They received mostly positive comments but not the win they anticipated.

LEAH & ASH

The talk of the week was all about the scalloped ceiling Leah & Ash were planning and luckily, they managed to pull it off. "Wow! How's that!? A scalloped ceiling in a week, a week!" Shaynna exclaimed excitedly. Marty said there was "a real vibe walking in there at the end at the end of the day".

Leah and Ash spent a mid-range $32,372 on their master bedroom, statement ceiling, and walk-in robe, but with a couple of wins under their belt, they had some extra money in their pockets.

Their eclectic styling was not a hit with the judges this week, with Darren commenting "This chair, that rug, this bed cover, the stripes… it's in an argument with itself."

They were certainly brave in their choice of colour for their walk-in robe – burgundy – which the judges thought could be a mistake as it’s quite a polarising colour.

ELIZA & LIBERTY

Most of the comments from the judges centred around the “reclaimed timber” and the last-minute staining of the benchtop. They were the only team coming in under Scotty’s suggested budget at $23,952 but maybe should have spent just a little more for a more luxe benchtop.

Their tense relationship with their builder continues to escalate, which does little to make their life easier.

Darren is concerned about their use of a limited colour palette of orange and blue, suggesting they explore some other colours.

Marty loved the girls' floor plan, saying "Buyers will look at this floorplan, and I don't think they're going to be able to fault it." "That for me is the key for these guys. They may not win a room, but it doesn't mean they cannot win The Block."

Get The Look

KYLE & LESLIE

They’ve already had a bad week and are struggling with being away from their children, so the comments from the judges did not end the week on a good note.

"I walk in here and I see everything I don't want to see," Shaynna comments. "I don't want to see bedside tables that can hardly hold a live candle that's about to fall off. You couldn't even put a book on that with a cup," she commented.

"They need to think about what is liveable, not Instagrammable," says Marty. It's as simple as that." "Exactly," agreed Shaynna.

Their walk-in robe gets a more positive reaction, but once the judges are all in there, they feel the space is too tight. Having spent $32,795 this week, they commented that they weren’t going to change anything.

We look forward to next week – the drama, the bickering, the tears but most of all - the reveal of the kitchens. This will put the whole, living, dining and kitchen area into perspective and really give the judges something to talk about.
