Teak is the most desired wood for outdoor furniture because of its natural weather resistant features, after all it has been used since the Middle Ages in the construction of boats.  Another feature is the high oil content that naturally occurs in teak which makes it water and decay resistant.

The warm, luscious honey-brown colour and tight, dense grain are highly sought after especially for outdoor furniture. It ages gracefully and becomes even more handsome over time – weathering to a lovely soft grey colour.  The grey patina is a result of oxidation which occurs naturally to form a protective layer on the timber – Mother Nature’s natural defence against the elements.

It is a hardwood, and as such, slow growing, taking between 35 and 50 years for trees to reach maturity so instead of cutting new timber for our outdoor furniture we have chosen to utilise reclaimed timber.

Myanmar and Indonesia are now the largest suppliers of Teak although is not indigenous to Indonesia. In the 16th Century, Buddhist monks brought it from Burma (now called Myanmar) and it was then expanded into larger plantations by the Dutch to service their ships sailing the Dutch East Indies spice routes. It was used extensively throughout Indonesia for the construction of buildings and bridges so luckily there is an abundance of old growth teak in Indonesia to be salvaged from these now unused buildings and bridges, so no living trees need to be cut.

The processing of reclaimed wood uses fewer resources than processing new wood, and material that may have ended up in landfill is repurposed and given a second chance which is also better for the environment.

With minimal care, you will be enjoying your reclaimed teak outdoor furniture for many years and so will future generations.

The Australian way of life lends itself to casual outdoor eating and entertaining so a fabulous, reclaimed teak table is the perfect addition to any outdoor space. What looks more natural in an outdoor setting than timber?
