Father's Day is believed to have originated in the United States and the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, in the state of Washington.

The exact origins of the holiday are not entirely clear, but it is attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd who was inspired by the Mother's Day celebration and wanted to create a day to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. She suggested June 5th, her father's birthday, but the date was later changed to the third Sunday in June. It wasn't until 1972 that Father's Day became a nationwide holiday in the United States when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

Over time, the celebration of Father's Day spread to many other countries, where it is celebrated on various dates throughout the year. Different countries have their own unique traditions and customs to honour fathers on this special day.  In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September which this year falls on the 3rd of September.

Celebrating Father's Day is a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation and love for your dad or father figure in your life. Of course, it’s nice to buy him something you know he will love but there are so many other ways to show him you care - here are some thoughtful and creative ideas to make the day special.

COOK OR BAKE FOR HIM

Prepare his favourite meal or bake a special Father's Day cake. Cooking something you know he enjoys shows you put some extra thought into the celebration, and that you know his likes and dislikes.

PLAN A FAMILY OUTING

Organize a day out doing activities your dad loves. It could be a hike, fishing trip, visit to a museum, or attending a sports event together.  It’s a day to do the things he loves.

PERSONALISED GIFTS

Consider giving your dad a personalised gift, such as a custom-made mug, engraved keychain, or a photo book filled with memories of you together.

HANDWRITTEN CARD

Write a heartfelt card expressing your love and gratitude. This personal touch can mean a lot to your dad, and he can keep it close and reread it for years.

CREATE A MEMORY JAR

Fill a jar with slips of paper containing your favourite memories, inside jokes, tickets to sporting matches or musicals you’ve attended together, and reasons why you love your dad. It will be a gift he can cherish and revisit whenever he wants.

HOME VIDEO OR SLIDESHOW

Create a video or slideshow with pictures and videos of special moments together. You can add music and captions to make it even more meaningful.

DIY PROJECT

If you enjoy crafting, create a DIY gift for your dad. It could be a handmade card, a painted picture, or a small item that holds sentimental value.  Get your thinking cap on and start creating.

PLAN A SURPRISE PARTY

Coordinate with other family members or friends to throw a surprise Father's Day party. Make sure to invite his favourite people to join in the celebration. It’s also a great excuse to catch up with the whole family.

GIFT OF TIME

We all live busy lives, so scheduling one-on-one time to spend quality time with your dad to do something he loves whether it’s to play games, watch a movie, or have meaningful conversations together – making beautiful memories that will last a lifetime may be the best gift of all.

Remember, the most important thing is to make your dad and all the father figures in your life feel loved and appreciated. Tailor the celebration to personal preferences and interests to create a memorable Father's Day experience.
