We all have a natural inclination towards a particular season, be it the warmth of Summer, the rejuvenating freshness of Spring, the cosiness of Winter, or the bountifulness of Autumn. This fondness is often reflected in our choice of clothing colours and home decor. If you're an Autumn person, it might be because this season embodies a combination of all the seasons. The cool, crisp mornings with frosty grass in the park, followed by a warm day and a drop in temperature as the sun sets, renders Autumn perfect for heart-warming meals and snuggling on the sofa.
As Autumn approaches, it’s easy to notice the changes in nature. The colour is the first thing you will notice - the leaves start to turn from all shades of green into an Autumn colour palette with beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red, before falling and covering the parks and footpaths. While it may require some effort to clean up the yard, children and dogs love the crunch of the leaves, making it a fun game to play with them.
The sun may still briefly appear every day, but the warmth has disappeared from it, and the evenings are colder, making sleeping so much easier. It’s the time for layering – for both clothing and bed linen. An extra layer on the bed is called for so treat yourself to a new coverlet and some matching shams and not only do you have the extra warmth that’s needed, but you can change the ambience of your bedroom – making it warmer and cosier than it has been over the past months. Add a throw too, it’s perfect for snuggling into when you’re reading or watching TV in bed but can also add some texture, and another colour to your room.
Embrace the longer evenings and create a calm, relaxing atmosphere. There’s an interior design secret that makes it easy to do this – turn off overhead lighting and enjoy flickering scented candles or some gentle lighting from table lamps, while you snuggle under a cosy throw on the sofa. Keep a selection of throws handy in some baskets or on the sofas, so everyone can keep warm, and you can save a little bit of money but not turning the heating on yet!
Taking inspiration from the beautiful transformation of the trees in Autumn, we can learn the art of letting go. As we witness the leaves fall away, it's a reminder that we too should take the time to declutter our surroundings and let go of the past. We can reflect on the Summer that has just passed and plan for the Winter ahead. This is an opportunity to reorganize our wardrobe, give new purpose to unused objects, and simplify our lives. Mother Nature always has something to teach us, and it's up to us to be open to learning.
WHAT ARE AUTUMN COLOURS?
The influences for Autumn colours are taken from Mother Nature and from Autumn foliage – but that doesn’t mean that’s only red, orange and yellow. There are so many variations of these hues to choose from. Pick up a few leaves and really look at them – what might look like a yellow leaf actually has lots of shades from soft, buttery yellow through to mustard yellows. The same is true with the red and orange leaves – and you can select the hues that resonate with you whether it’s a highly contrasting palette or soft Autumn colours. The Autumn spectrum is open to interpretation and your personal preferences.
As there’s a noticeable absence of green around in Autumn – and we love bringing the outside inside - green is a beautiful Autumn colour - any hue from soft olive green through to dark forest green and all the shades in between.
HOW TO STYLE YOUR HOME IN AUTUMN
Just as we dress with more layers in Autumn, we should add more layers to our homes. The warm Autumn colours lend themselves to lots of colour combining and adding textural interest with layers.
Autumn decorating ideas don’t have to be complicated or expensive – add some throws, cushions or decorative accents in Autumn hues.
The deep Autumn foliage is far too pretty to be left outside, cut some branches and fill up a large vase to bring the outside in and appreciate it indoors. Pop it on the dining table, on a sideboard in front of a mirror in the living room or create a smaller display and enjoy it on the coffee table.
Rug up and enjoy long walks, enjoy the great outdoors, kick up the leaves, explore Farmer’s Markets and come home laden with seasonal produce to cook hearty meals.
Make the most of Autumn– it’s only here for a couple of months!
