Whatever inspiration you’re after…. a new recipe to wow the family, a little bit of help making the perfect bed, styling a sideboard, some lifestyle articles or what’s new at Provincial, our Journal will bring you stories to brighten your day.

Is this the forgotten room in your home? We spend so much time styling the rest of our homes – why do we sometimes forget the bathrooms? Whatever your bathroom design, Bathroom styling gives you the chance to change the room (without a bathroom renovation) from utilitarian to chic.
Whether it’s your own personal haven, a powder room or the children’s bathroom – a little bit of styling can go a long way in changing the look and functionality of a bathroom.
Take some time before you start styling, to make sure your bathroom is clean and clutter-free. Remove any unnecessary items, cull and organise toiletries and sort towels to see which ones can stay and which should be relegated to washing the dog!
Decide on a colour scheme that reflects your style and creates the mood you want in the bathroom. Neutral colours like white, beige, or grey create a clean look and a calming atmosphere, while bold colours can add a vibrant touch. Towel colours will be influenced by the existing tile and paint colours.
Don’t love your bathroom? For a budget friendly update – instead of a full bathroom renovation, change fixtures and fittings like taps, showerheads, towel racks, and cabinet hardware to update your bathroom. Choose from chrome, brushed nickel, or matte black for a modern look, but select a finish and colour that will not date. These simple changes can instantly update a tired bathroom.
Good lighting in a bathroom is crucial for both practicality and setting the right atmosphere. You need a different light to do your makeup than when you want to relax in a bath, so a mix of overhead, task-focused lights (like lights near the vanity mirror), and accent lighting that work independently, so you can craft the perfect lighting.
You can never have enough storage in your bathroom, so do everything you can to maximise it. It will keep your room neat and make it much easier to style.
Sometimes the wall mounted cabinet is just not enough, if you’re working with a small space, add some floating shelves, a decorative ladder or if you have the luxury of extra space, a glass fronted cabinet could solve a lot of storage problems. How good would our Brisbane cabinet look stacked with towels, washes and other bathroom needs?
A bathroom should be practical, as well as beautiful. Here are some styling tips to help you.
HOW TO DECORATE YOUR BATHROOM
Soft, luxurious bath towels are a must, as are bath mats, face washers, and hand towels as the inclusion of soft textiles adds warmth and texture to a space that is made up of mainly hard surfaces.
Styling is all in the detail, so soap dispensers, toothbrush holders, toilet brushes and wastebaskets should not be overlooked. Choose colours and designs that seamlessly integrate with the overall aesthetic of your bathroom.
Personal elements in the bathroom really make the space yours which is why a piece of artwork or a sculpture work so well.
A timber stool in the bathroom is perfect next to a bath – perfect for a pile of towels, or for holding a candle while you’re relaxing in the warm water. Another great addition is a bath tray or rack to sit across the bath to add a face washer and a bottle of your favourite wash or keep it organic with some foot and body brushes.
HOW TO DECORATE YOUR BATHROOM BENCHTOP
A small vignette on the bathroom counter can look beautiful, and you can create it out of items that you use – so you’re not taking up space needlessly. Place a selection of skincare that you use every day on a marble tray, perfume bottles are pretty and make a beautiful display, or mix it up with a perfume bottle, a small sculpture and a little pot plant or vase of flowers – and you can change it whenever you feel like it. Just show a little restraint – you don’t want to take up all the bathroom countertop. A little interior design hint when displaying things or styling a vignette - odd numbers always work best – so group 3 or 5 items together.
BATHROOM STYLING FOR A POWDER ROOM
Although this is a small room, let’s not forget it as it’s the bathroom your guests will use. Style with items that don’t take up too much space - a scented candle or diffuser, or a small bunch of flowers, gorgeous handwash and a hand cream are thoughtful additions. You’ll need plenty of luxurious, thick hand towels, and a lovely piece of art for the wall.
BATHROOM STYLING IDEAS FOR CHILDREN'S BATHROOMS
While you don’t want to clutter the bathroom, you still want it to look good. You can add towels, toothbrush holders, a gallery wall of their framed artworks, hooks or a coat rack for towels – you’ll have more chance of the towels being thrown over a hook than carefully folded over a towel rail – and less chance of them ending up on the floor! Baskets make a great storage option and one for each child makes a lot of sense.
Styling your bathroom is all about choosing and arranging things to make it look amazing but do not detract from the practicality of the bathroom space. Pick colours, fixtures, and accessories, that you love. Add plants, art, mirrors, and storage to make it both practical and stylish. Don't forget about lighting - it can make a big difference in how the space feels. If you're not sure what you want, try out different styles until you find one that fits your taste and matches the feel of your home.
