The right rug will weave a story, ground the room, and add extra foot warming comfort.

Where do you start? Take into consideration practical elements first… size and material. You don’t want to fall in love with a rug, only to find out it’s not available in the size you want. Do you want to go big and bold to sit all the furniture on or choose a smaller rug as an accent? A larger rug will make a room look larger but a couple of smaller rugs in a large space help to define different areas.

So, how do you choose the right size rug? The size of the rug under a dining table is probably the hardest to visualise and get right. These are some of the best ways to sit the furniture on (or off) the rug for the best results.

HOW SHOULD A RUG BE PLACED IN A ROOM?

RUG CONFIGURATIONS FOR LIVING, DINING AND BED ROOMS

MATERIAL IS THE NEXT CONSIDERATION.

Are there children or pets in the home? Is it in a high traffic area where you need a hard-wearing material? Wool or jute rugs are the best choices for high traffic areas. Once you’ve decided on the size and material you can move on to the decorative decisions such as colour and pattern.

WHAT ATMOSPHERE ARE YOU LOOKING TO CREATE?

A calm and relaxing living room? A fun family room? A reading nook? A serene bedroom? The choice of colour and pattern will influence the ambience you are trying to create.

HOW TO CHOOSE RUG COLOUR?

It doesn’t have to match everything in the room, but it should work with the textures and tones. If you have patterned furniture, plainer rugs may be the best option but if your furniture is upholstered in plain coloured fabric – the choices are endless. Select a plain rug in a matching colour with a self-pattern for a tonal look, select a colour that you love or a colour or pick up some of your other accessories or add a patterned rug.

Rug choices can be daunting, but, once you’ve carefully considered the four following steps you should have narrowed the choices and decided what you do and don’t want.

  1. Size
  2. Material
  3. Colour
  4. Pattern

Once you’ve made the investment – it’s important to look after it, so here are some tips to help.

Provincial Home Living rugs are meticulously crafted using high-quality fibres, employing skilled artisans. Every rug has unique characteristics, reflecting the distinct artistic touch and design variations of the individual creator. We are committed to ensuring that no child labour is involved in the production of our rugs.

Upon delivery, your new rug may display creases from being rolled for shipping, which will naturally disappear over time when the rug is laid flat. To prevent slipping and provide extra cushioning, we recommend using a rug mat.

HOW TO MAINTAIN & CARE FOR YOUR RUG

To maintain your rug's appearance, we suggest lightly vacuuming it at least once a week and using scissors to clip any snags or pulled threads. Rugs may fade over time when exposed to direct sunlight, so it's best to keep them out of such light where possible. For an extended rug life, rotate every six months (flipping if reversible) and have it professionally dry-cleaned at least every two years.

Promptly clean spills to prevent them from setting. In case of a water/liquid spill, cover the wet area with towels or cloth and apply pressure with a heavy, colour-fast object. Leave overnight and ensure the rug is dry both on the front and back. For food spills, remove them by gently scraping with a spoon or dull knife.

Always lift rather than dragging furniture on a rug.

Choosing the right rug is an essential aspect of interior design that can greatly enhance the overall look and feel of your living space. By considering factors such as living styles, rug colours, and coordination with other furniture pieces, you can find the perfect rug that adds both style and functionality to your home.

When selecting a rug, it's crucial to consider your living style. Whether you prefer a contemporary, minimalist, or traditional look, there are rugs available to suit every taste. Understanding your preferred style will guide you in choosing the right texture, pattern, and shape that will seamlessly integrate into your existing decor.

Colour is another important aspect when choosing a rug. To create a harmonious and cohesive space, consider the existing colour palette of your room. Opt for a rug colour that complements your furniture and walls. If you want a bold statement piece, choose a rug with vibrant hues. Alternatively, if you prefer a more subdued look, opt for neutral tones that can easily blend with any colour scheme.

When it comes to placement, rugs under couches can anchor the seating area and define the space. Ensure that the rug is large enough to accommodate all the furniture legs, creating a unified and visually appealing arrangement. Additionally, consider how the rug matches with the sofa to create a cohesive and balanced look.

Finally, styling rugs is all about experimenting with different patterns, textures, and layering techniques. Mixing and matching rugs can add depth and visual interest to your space. Don't be afraid to play with different rug sizes and shapes to create a unique and personalised look.

By following these guidelines, you can find the perfect rug that not only complements your space but also reflects your personal style and creates a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home.

Now you can relax and enjoy your new rug and its foot-warming comfort!
