Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries, our havens where we can truly be ourselves and find comfort from the hustle and bustle of daily life. They serve as more than just a place to sleep; they are intimate spaces that reflect our personalities, preferences, and comforts.

The rest of our homes are filled with shared spaces and communal living, but our bedrooms are our sleep space. Our bedroom is uniquely ours, a place to retreat from the outside world, where we can recharge and unwind.  After a long day, there's nothing quite like sinking into the comfort of our own bed. We should look forward to walking into our bedroom, adjusting the lighting, appreciating the aesthetically pleasing environment we’ve created, slipping between the best sheets we can afford and then relaxing.  That’s when all the cares of the day should be forgotten.

We all recognise the importance of high-quality sleep for our overall well-being, both physically and mentally. Ensuring that the bedroom design is optimised to promote restorative sleep is paramount. Whether it's choosing the ideal mattress and pillows or controlling factors like light and temperature, every aspect of bedroom design contributes significantly to promoting an environment that encourages a tranquil and rejuvenating night's rest.

Sometimes, having all the right elements for your bedroom is not enough. If they’re not put together carefully, it can be a disaster.

Bedroom design mistakes can be costly, so let’s go through a few mistakes to avoid to create your dream bedroom, tailored specifically to your needs.

UNDERSTAND LAYOUT LIMITATIONS

Before starting, understand your bedroom layout, including all doors, windows, and built-in cupboards to plan furniture placement.  Once you’ve done this, choose the essential pieces of furniture and build from there, starting with the bed.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SCALE AND PROPORTION

Choosing furniture that is either too large or too small for the room can throw off the balance and make the space feel awkward. It's important to consider the scale and proportion of each piece of furniture so they complement each other and work in relation to the size of the room.  Small bedrooms are a challenge but keeping in mind scale – it’s a challenge that can be overcome.  In a larger room with high ceilings, embrace vertical space with taller bedheads or even four-poster bed frames.

FOCAL POINT

Every room needs a focal point and as the bed typically takes centre stage in the bedroom, overlooking its comfort and style can be a significant oversight. Prioritise investing in a high-quality mattress, luxurious bedding, and an attractive headboard to establish an inviting centrepiece for the space.

OVERCROWDING AND TOO MUCH CLUTTER

One of the most common mistakes is overcrowding the space with too much furniture or décor and placing too many items on surfaces. This can make the room feel small, cluttered, and uncomfortable which is not conducive to relaxation.

INSUFFICIENT STORAGE

Lack of adequate storage is a huge mistake.  Smart solutions include built-in wardrobes, side tables with drawers, or everyone’s dream – a walk-in wardrobe.  The aim is to keep the actual sleeping space free from clutter.

LIGHT IN THE BEDROOM

Insufficient lighting or relying solely on overhead lighting can create a dull and uninspiring atmosphere.

Embrace natural light during daylight hours and combine ceiling lights with task, and accent lighting to effectively establish the desired mood for relaxation and infuse the space with warmth.

Bedside tables can hold decorative table lamps that are essential for reading in bed but are important design pieces to add colour, a pattern or some height to the room.  An hour before bed – go into the bedroom and turn on the bedside lights, no other lighting, so when you walk into the room later – the room is already in relaxed mode – so you will be too!

CONFUSED COLOUR PALETTE

Using too many colours or random colour combinations that are not relaxing can make the room feel chaotic and overwhelming, again not ideal for creating a calm environment.  Choose a cohesive colour palette that promotes relaxation and tranquillity.

An interior designer will rely on the 60-30-10 rule when choosing a colour scheme for good reason – it works!

60% dominant colour, this colour will anchor the room and serve as a backdrop for other colours.  It is best used for walls, floor rugs, and large furniture pieces. 30% secondary colour (half as much as the main colour).  It supports the main colour but is different enough to give contrast and interest. This can be used in window coverings, accent chairs, bed linens, painted furniture, or an accent wall

10% accent shade, this is where you can add pops of colour.  Select a colour from artwork in the room or a colour from a floor rug and use it as an accent colour for things like bedside lamps, cushions, and throws.

Embracing the 60-30-10 rule is like having a secret formula for crafting a colour palette that just works. It's the key to achieving that perfect blend of colours that not only look good but also feel right together.  The ratios are not set in stone - you can adjust them (slightly) to fit your style and the vibe you want in your space. So, whether you're into bold statements or subtle hues, it's all about finding that sweet spot where everything feels balanced and cosy, making your bedroom the ultimate retreat.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON BEDROOM STYLING MISTAKES?

Choosing style over comfort is a mistake that is easy to make.  Decorating solely based on trends, something you’ve seen in a magazine or what's popular rather than echoing your style can result in a space that doesn't feel authentic or comfortable to you. Your bedroom should reflect your personality and preferences and you don’t want to skimp on comfort to re-create a look you love in a magazine.

Another common bedroom styling mistake is ignoring the importance of balance.  A harmonious and visually pleasing space relies heavily on furniture placement, symmetry, and visual weight. The arrangement and layout of furniture play a crucial role in achieving a balanced look. Careful attention to these aspects ensures coherence, creates a perfect base and enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the room.

Forgetting to add personal touches is another mistake that can leave your room feeling impersonal and bare. Including artwork, photographs and special mementos can make the space feel more inviting and reflect who you are.  Just on artwork – when you’re hanging it, the middle of the painting should be at eye level – hanging it at the wrong height can throw the whole room out of balance.

Our bedrooms are more than just rooms; they are spaces where we can truly be ourselves, find comfort, seek solace and nourish our minds and souls. These spaces hold a special place in our hearts, providing peace, calm, and a means of self-expression.
